Although most people have no problems when using Benlysta® (belimumab), there are certain risks to be aware of before beginning treatment. For example, side effects are possible with this medication, such as nausea, fever, common cold symptoms, and diarrhea. People using it may also be at a greater risk for developing fungal, bacterial, or viral infections.
In addition, certain people may have a greater risk of problems with Benlysta than others, such as people with a history of cancer, tuberculosis, or a weakened immune system. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should talk with their healthcare providers before taking this drug.
It should be noted, however, that most people are able to receive Benlysta without any risk to their health. In cases where side effects do occur, the problems tend to be minor, requiring little (if any) treatment.
