Botulism is a rare but serious illness that is caused by toxins (poisons) produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. These toxins are among the most poisonous substances known to exist. The three main types of botulism include foodborne, wound, and infant botulism. All forms of the illness can be fatal and are considered medical emergencies.
