About Leprosy

Leprosy is a disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae. It is highly contagious and can have effects throughout the body, including the:
 
  • Skin
  • Nerves
  • Mucous membranes
  • Eyes
  • Muscles
  • Bones
  • Testes.

Symptoms of leprosy vary widely and are based on several different factors, one of which is the type of leprosy a person has. In fact, other conditions share similar symptoms, and these diseases will have to be ruled out when considering a leprosy diagnosis.
