Leprosy is a contagious disease that is caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae. It usually affects the skin and peripheral nerves, and is quite possibly the most common cause of crippling in the hands in the world. Although it is not known exactly how leprosy is spread, some researchers believe it is spread from person to person through infected respiratory droplets. Other factors that may play a role in a person developing the disease include genetics, the extent of exposure, and environmental conditions.
