Leprosy is a contagious disease caused by an infection with the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae. It usually affects the skin and peripheral nerves. Worldwide, 1 to 2 million people are permanently disabled because of the disease. While there is no cure for leprosy, most people can be treated with antibiotics. Treatment will generally continue for one year to two years, depending on whether it is the lepromatous form or tuberculoid form of disease.
