Scleroderma Causes: Hormones

By the middle to late childbearing years (ages 30 to 55), women develop scleroderma at a rate 7 to 12 times higher than men. Because more women than men develop scleroderma, scientists suspect that something distinctly feminine, such as the hormone estrogen, plays a role in the disease. So far, however, the role of estrogen or other female hormones has not been proven.
