What Are the Common Reactions to Tdap?
Common Side Effects
Tdap has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people who received Tdap were documented and compared to side effects that occurred in a similar group of people who were given a similar vaccine that did not have the pertussis component (the traditional "Td" vaccine that has been given to adults for years). This way, it is possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compare to the group given the Td vaccine.
In these studies, the most common Tdap side effects included:
- Injection site pain
- Injection site redness
- Injection site swelling
- Gastrointestinal symptoms (such as nausea).
(Click Adacel Side Effects and Boostrix Side Effects for more information about the specific frequency of these side effects for each particular vaccine).
It is possible that you may experience some or none of the side effects listed in this article. Unfortunately, there is no way for your healthcare provider to know beforehand if you will have side effects from a vaccine. Therefore, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop any side effects after receiving Tdap or if something "just does not seem right." While it may not be a side effect, your healthcare provider will be able to diagnose and treat the problem.
